The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019 was passed by both Houses of Parliament in August 2019. It received the assent of the President of India on 9th August, 2019. The Act bifurcated the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories: (1) J&K with a Legislature, and (2) Ladakh without a Legislature. The Act came into force on October 31, 2019, on the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
