Question

The largest District in terms of area in J&K state is:

1. A. Doda
2. B. Leh (Correct answer)
3. C. Kargil
4. D. Srinagar

Correct Answer

Option B — Leh

Detailed Solution & Explanation

The correct answer is Leh.

Key Points

• Leh was the largest district by area in the erstwhile State of Jammu & Kashmir, covering roughly 45,000 sq km.
• Its vast, sparsely populated high-altitude terrain makes it far larger in area than any district of the Kashmir or Jammu divisions.

Additional Information

• After the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, Leh and Kargil became part of the separate Union Territory of Ladakh.
• Leh sits at about 3,500 m above sea level, and the district contains the Siachen Glacier and part of the Karakoram range.
• Contrast with the smallest district by area, Srinagar, which is also among the most densely populated.
